London Hotel Hospitality Guestroom Integrated Canopy Layered Light Illuminating Soft Lighting Designers Nulty

Canopy by Hilton London City

Channeling the eclectic East End

The latest of the Canopy by Hilton hotels has opened its doors in the hip and trendy East End of London and we were asked to develop a lighting scheme for the new addition. Each Canopy by Hilton location is designed to emanate the local neighbourhood and this 340-guestroom hotel does just that.

We created a refined yet abstract lighting design to highlight ACME’s interior scheme, which was inspired by the vibrant textile and arts scene that pervades the area. Integrated with the stylish interiors; layers of light, decorative pendants, and subtle cove lighting give-way to the character of the hotel, encouraging an energising, yet understated atmosphere, enhancing the creative flair that permeates throughout.

The historical textile buildings were transformed into an eco-conscious hotel with a façade that encapsulates the spirit of stylish East London. Uplights with a narrow six-degree beam were placed in columns around the building, allowing for precision when illuminating the undulating contours of the exterior. Encased in the same material as the façade, the housing of each spotlight is seamless, allowing for an elegant and integrated solution.

The purpose of the light in the guest bedrooms serves to soften the industrial aesthetic of the recycled steel and sustainable wood interiors. Along this vein, we created pockets of light by employing black surface mounted can lighting across the ceiling to bounce light onto the furnishings of the room. Edge lighting surrounds the headboard of the bed, emitting a diffused glow. Floor lamps and bedside wall lights supplement the room by adding layers of light to underpin a sense of ease. The bathrooms have a discreet and integrated design – a halo of light surrounds the mirror and downlights illuminate bright, crisp surfaces.

The Retreat, a modern yet cosy space for guests to relax in, benefits from integrated lighting throughout the shelving to draw the eye to the curiosities sat within. Ceiling cans provide downlighting that emphasise the soft furnishings and nature inspired wall art.

The lobby lounge area is surrounded by a softly illuminated coffer, which gently frames a series of orb pendants that complement the low ceilings. The bar area is brightly lit, echoing the sentiment of the lively East End neighbourhood. Integrated lighting washes the bar, inviting guests to take a seat and unwind from the London hustle and bustle.
