The redesigned Carl Nielsen Museum in Odense tells the story of the celebrated Danish composer through an immersive exhibition in which his music is experienced as a living force.
Realised as a current of light that flows through the exhibition, this unifying motif becomes the heartbeat of the experience, guiding visitors through the narrative and inviting them to become active participants in Nielsen’s musical world.
It begins with a spark of light in the Calibration section, a pared-back space framed by a three-sided projection. Filaments concealed behind the fabric screens form multiple flickers of light that dance across the surfaces, depicting the composer’s passion for music taking shape. The sparks gradually transition from two-dimensional to three-dimensional forms, moving across the screens and up the staircase to draw visitors into the next stage of the exhibition.
Exploration is the main hub of the exhibition, a space where visitors are invited to delve deeper into the composer’s work. The initial spark of creativity evolves into an energising wave, comprised of multiple glass bulbs suspended at varying heights. Concentrated points of light highlight the interactive touchpoints, intensifying as visitors approach, then gradually fading as each piece of digital content concludes. Light and sound are also harmonised at the listening stations to reflect the character of music being played – bright and intense for energetic compositions, and softer for a more delicate score.
The interplay between sound and light reaches its crescendo in the Immersion space, where the wave of light becomes a singular, continuous band of colour. Multiple layers of filaments create structured pockets of light across the colour-washed surface, culminating in a dynamic moment where light and sound are fully synchronised to bring the narrative to a close.
