Architectural projects sometimes take an unexpected path. For the Al Ain Museum in Abu Dhabi, it was the discovery of archaeological remains dating back to desert civilisations.
Uncovered during construction, these findings prompted the expansion of the museum, allowing visitors to view the excavated areas as part of the experience. A contemporary extension was integrated into the scheme, a sensitive addition that sits naturally alongside the original 1970s building and the early 20th-century Sultan Fort that also occupies the site.
Never afraid to meet a challenge, we relished the opportunity to bring these different layers of history together through an elegant hierarchy of light, designed to activate the museum after dark and create visual harmony throughout.
Preserving the authenticity of the historic fort was key. We bathed its defensive features, rounded corner towers and entranceways in warm light, evoking the soft glow of candlelight that once illuminated its mud-brick form.
In the newly created entrance plaza, the lighting creates a memorable arrival moment. A series of illuminated steps produces a subtle element of dynamism within the clean lines and muted tones of the architecture, drawing visitors towards the threshold and inviting them to explore.
Gentle expressions of light enhance the new extension, highlighting the contours of the architecture and the detail of its sand-textured façade. We reinforced these lines of light with illuminated window reveals and recessed fixtures along the base of the walls, adding small but impactful touches of ambience and drama.
Inside the museum, minimalist tracks with mounted spotlights improve visibility around the exhibitions and artefacts. This approach was carried into the archaeological-focused galleries, ensuring each discovery feels like a part of the wider experience. Spotlights reveal the ancient wells beneath the museum, while in the Falaj Gallery, downlights illuminate the viewing platforms to guide visitors through the excavated falaj channels.
