Jungwon Jung

Senior Lighting Designer

As a Senior Lighting Designer at Nulty, Jung manages projects from concept to completion while also leading a small but highly talented team.

Her academic background is rooted in London, where she completed an MA in Information Experience Design, exploring the creation of spatial experiences, and a BA in Graphic and Media Design, which helped her build a strong foundation in visual communication.

Before joining Nulty, she worked at a light art installation studio, where she first developed an appreciation for taking ideas from concept through to hands-on making. She then spent around seven years at another lighting practice in London, honing her skills and expertise as an architectural lighting designer.

Jung’s interest in lighting design grew from a deep fascination with human experience—how spaces influence people, and the pivotal role light plays in shaping those experiences. Architectural lighting design felt like a natural fit, combining her creative skills with her curiosity about spatial interaction.

The most rewarding part of her role comes when a project is finally complete and people begin to inhabit the space, making memories and shaping their own experiences within it. Within the studio, she is known for her user-centred approach to design. She brings insights about behaviour and interaction into the early concept stage, ensuring the design feels right for the architecture while also telling a clear story. This approach helps the team anticipate project needs early and build strong foundations for successful outcomes.

For her, light is both a tool and a mystery. Its intangible quality means it often behaves in unexpected ways, but that unpredictability is what makes it so special. She sees her role as translating something intangible into an experience people can feel—a challenge that continues to inspire her.

When asked about her dream project, she describes it as one that would endure in memory and history, where light forms the heart of the space, much like the architecture of Louis Kahn.

Beyond work, she enjoys playing tennis—even if she admits she isn’t as skilled as she’d like to be—and plans to take proper lessons. Music is another passion, particularly ambient and electronic gigs, though she also has a soft spot for classical performances, especially when the piano takes centre stage. At home, she shares her life with Winston, an adorable golden cocker spaniel.

She is also deeply passionate about observing how trends and behaviours evolve. For her, uncovering what people need is not only fascinating but also invaluable in shaping projects that remain relevant and meaningful.
