When a place of learning feels like a forest, who would want to leave? Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) is a campus with a difference: a green and community-led environment, conceived as a hub for knowledge and innovation.
Our lighting scheme for the SIT Plot-1 Campus forms part of the Klaasen team’s wider remit to deliver the lighting strategy for Punggol Digital District (PDD) – a collaborative ecosystem that unites students, faculty members, industry partners and technology hubs.
Adopting the principles of the wider PDD lighting masterplan, we focused on producing a vibrant and accessible scheme that preserves its landscape setting. The response? Layers of light, subtly integrated to work in harmony with the campus-within-a-park architecture, establishing a sense of arrival at drop-off points and creating warmth and ambience across the pathways and plazas.
The lighting design also promotes connectivity and permeability, improving visibility and wayfinding along the main pedestrian spine, including the Campus Boulevard and Collaboration Loop. Carefully integrated, low-glare lighting defines these routes, maintaining visual comfort and protecting the character of the landscape.
Smart lighting systems also support PDD’s ambitions as a smart and sustainable district, responding to natural light levels and activity and adapting throughout the day and evening to support campus life in the most efficient way.
