Strengthening Our Commitment to Innovation

We are proud to announce that Gary Thornton has been appointed Director of Education – a newly created role that will define how we learn, grow and lead as a practice.

Over the past few years, Gary has been central to advancing education at Nulty, playing a pivotal role in our ongoing mission to build a team of informed and empowered designers. In this new position, he will expand these efforts further by overseeing professional development, technical excellence and sustainable working practices across our global studios.

The role encompasses both internal team development and external client engagement, including training, research and CPD programmes. He will also work to refine the team’s knowledge of accreditation frameworks and technical standards, and drive Nulty’s early-career initiatives by shaping our in-house apprenticeship scheme, student internship programme and outreach to schools and colleges.

Paul Nulty, Founder, Nulty: “Education is fundamental to who we are as a practice and how we deliver boundary-breaking design work for our clients. Gary’s role is about recognising the complexity of our discipline and ensuring we are prepared to meet the industry’s ever-shifting challenges. By aligning education with sustainable innovation, we will maintain our position as industry leaders and continue to redefine the impact of light on the world around us.”

Sustainable design principles, knowledge-sharing and advocacy will form a significant part of the education agenda, areas that Gary has championed in recent years by establishing in-house circular economy benchmarks to reduce environmental impact.

Gary Thornton, Director of Education, Nulty: “I have always approached my work with a sustainability bias and am excited for the opportunity to champion this at a global level. As the industry places greater emphasis on sustainability metrics and the built environment becomes ever more complex, it is imperative that we deliver creative and technical lighting design solutions while responding to evolving requirements and client expectations.”
